Event Description: OKANAGAN GOES PINK TO STOP BULLYING April 14, 2010 Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs Promotes Wearing Pink to Raise Awareness The Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs are once again joining the Provincial and National movement to celebrate Pink Shirt Day – Bullying Stops Here, on April 14, 2010. The City of Kelowna has proclaimed April 14, 2010 as Pink Shirt Day – Anit-Bullying Day in the City of Kelowna. Club kids, Boys & Girls Club staff, local Okanagan School Districts, McDonald’s staff and other community members will be wearing pink to raise awareness and to demonstrate that we are all part of the solution to stop bullying. Order your special Pink Shirt Day T-shirt for yourself, your staff, friends and family through the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs for only $5 by contacting Miriam King at 250-762-3914 or [email protected]. Shirts are also available at any London Drugs store in the Okanagan. All proceeds will help support the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs to give children, youth and families “a good place to be”. We are looking to build on last year’s success in the Okanagan by encouraging the whole community to wear pink on April 14th to show that bullying will no longer be tolerated. Boys and Girls Clubs across the Okanagan will be participating in planned activities that provide education, awareness and teach skills to encourage empathy building during the week leading up to Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day originates from Nova Scotia where two young men stood up to bullying in their high school. A new student was being bullied and was harassed when he showed up at school wearing a pink T-shirt. In support, these two young men went to a discount store and purchased 50 pink T-shirts. They enlisted fellow students to wear the pink shirts at school to support the new student who was being bullied. Since this powerful act of solidarity, Pink Shirt Day has made its way across Canada and into BC. In the Okanagan, the 2009 call to make a statement against bullying by wearing pink was met with an overwhelming response from schools, employers and politicians. Thousands of people wore pink as they made their way to school or their workplace. Please help us build on last year’s success by ordering your shirt today and wearing pink on April 14, 2010. Visit your local Okanagan Boys & girls Clubs for more information or check us out on the web at www.boysandgirlsclubs.ca. Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs is a leading provider of programs to children and youth that support the healthy physical, educational and social development of more than 5,000 young people and their families each year.
