Event Description: Program Summary: Just as employers have taken action to reduce physical risk in the workplace, they are looking for ways to reduce psychological risk. In addition to the ethical obligation to enhance psychological safety, the startling increase in disability from psychological conditions (mainly depression and anxiety) increases the urgency of action. Dan and his associate Merv Gilbert have been leaders in this field for the past 20 years, developing practical tools to support employers in taking action that is effective and affordable. They have collaborated with the Mental Health Commission of Canada, the Great-West Life Centre for Mental Health, the BC Ministry of Health, the Provincial Health Services Authority and other groups. The tools they have developed include Guarding Minds @ Work (profiles psychological risk factors in the workplace), Antidepressant Skills @ Work (teaches psychological safety skills), Employer’s Action Guide to Psychological Health & Safety (provides a user-friendly guide to effective action), and the Measure of Organizational Readiness for Psychological Health (assesses readiness for action). They are currently consulting to the Mental Health Commission to evaluate the progress of 40 organizations (including some of the largest companies in Canada) as they implement the National Standard for Psychological Health & Safety in the Workplace. You Will Learn: - Understand the rationale for addressing psychological safety. - Know how to use the set of psychological safety tools. - Know how to make an action plan that is effective and appropriate for your work setting. Presenter: Dan Bilsker, PhD, is a psychologist who partners with Dr. Merv Gilbert in the Psych Health + Safety consultancy. He is affiliated with the Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health & Addiction (Simon Fraser University) where he co-leads a research team that has developed an array of tools for the protection of psychological safety at work, including Guarding Minds@Work and the Employer’s action Guide to Psychological Health and Safety. He maintains a Vancouver practice in clinical psychology, providing work-focused cognitive behavioural treatment. His academic appointments are Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University and Clinical Assistant Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia. Who Should Attend: This session will primarily benefit Human Resources professionals, but also individuals working as part of occupational health and safety committees, occupational health staff, those contributing to Well-being programs, union representatives and organizational leaders wishing to learn more about this new area of psychological health and safety.
