Event Description: New legislation improves worker safety: WCA Amendments -- A year of change Learn about recent changes to the Workers Compensation Act and regulations to improve workplace health and safety. These changes improve the tools that WorkSafeBC uses to deal with non-compliance as well as expand the role of occupational health and safety committees to strengthen the partnership between workers and employers in creating safer workplaces. In addition significant changes were made to employers’ regulatory obligation in respect of incident investigations and reporting. The changes arose from the tragedy of the sawmill explosions that occurred in 2012 in Burns Lake and Prince George which killed four people. Following the explosions WorkSafe BC Administrator, Gord Macatee, prepared the “WorkSafeBC Review and Action Plan.” On July 15, 2014 Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour, and the board of directors of WorkSafeBC accepted all 43 recommendations, 12 of which required consideration of legislative changes.
