Event Description: Early Music Studio presents Shakespeare’s World: Music and Words with Clive Titmuss, lute; Susan Adams, harpsichord, and guest artist Anna Hagan, reader an evening of Elizabethan poetry and music on instruments of the period Mary Irwin Theatre, Rotary Centre for the Arts, 421 Cawston, on Friday, June 10 at 7:30. What sounds and words did Shakespeare hear? One of the founders of the English language lived in a sound world very different from ours, from which he created works of lasting beauty and meaning. Early Music studio presents a concert which allows the audience to hear not only Shakespeare’s words, but the harmonies and melodies that filled the air during his life. With guest reader Anna Hagan, director of Western Gold Theatre, harpsichord player Susan Adams and lutenist Clive Titmuss explore the colourful lost landscape of the Bard’s world—the tunes, joyful and melancholy melodies—which he heard, forming inspiration for the richness of his writing. Shakespeare was not the only striking genius around 1600. A wealth of music by John Dowland for the lute, and by William Byrd for the harpsichord show that poetry and plays were not the only great creations from that most creative time. The performance interweaves the plays, the poems and the music of these masters into a masterful staging of Elizabethan genius.
