Event Description: Border Free Bees at UBC and the Kelowna Art Gallery invite you to a talk by Dr. Mark Winston, author of Bee Time on Thursday, October 6, 7 – 8:30 PM at the Kelowna Art Gallery, 1315 Water St, Kelowna, BC. Admission is free but because of the popularity of this event, we ask that you register at EVENT BRITE: https://drmarkwinston.eventbrite.ca. Mark Winston believes humans can learn a lot from the bees in terms of building a balanced community.  “Bees are an extraordinarily collaborative society, in which the good for society always comes first,” he says. “To me the best way for personal health is to build a strong community that each of us can thrive in.” Come and hear Dr. Winston’s talk and reading from his remarkable book, Bee Time: Lessons from the Hive. Mark Winston has had a distinguished career researching, teaching, writing and commenting on bees and agriculture, environmental issues, and science policy. For over two decades, he has taught, researched and wrote extensively on bees, agriculture, environmental issues and science policy. Receiving substantial government funding for his research, Winston was motivated to give back by communicating his findings in a clear and approachable fashion for the community at large, culminating in his most recent book, Bee Time: Lessons From the Hive (Harvard University Press 2014) which won the Governor’s General’s award for non-fiction in 2015. This talk is part of the programming attached to the gallery exhibition For All is For Yourself (FAIFY). FAIFY aims to raise interest and awareness of the plight of native pollinators in British Columbia. This collaborative artwork was produced with the support of over 100 individuals across Kelowna, Richmond and Vancouver who assisted in creating the hand-made seed paper that was transformed into the 10,000 bumblebees on the gallery walls. The show will be up in the Front Space of the Kelowna Art Gallery from June 20 – October 7th 2016. After Dr. Winston’s talk, the public will be invited to take the seed-embedded paper bees home with them to plant in their own gardens to help the bees! Sponsored by The Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC, The Eco Art Incubator, The Canada Council for the Arts, and BORDER FREE BEES (http://borderfreebees.com/ ). Book sales provided by Contact Kelowna’s Public Art Pollinator Pasture team at [email protected] if you need more information.
