Event Description: Studies show that pollinators are under increasing stress. We all can help in pollinator conservation and increase natural diversity and ecological resilience by improving our habitat for native pollinators. This presentation will illustrate the basic principles of how to create a diverse, drought-tolerant and pesticide-free habitat with plants that bloom from spring to fall to provide nectar and pollen throughout the season for all beneficial insects. Eva Antonijevic will be hosting this workshop as the first of our Kelowna Nectar Trail workshop series. She is a registered professional biologist and the Program Director of the Okanagan Xeriscape Association. Eva’s reverence for the Okanagan’s magnificent landscapes is her inspiration. She encourages the use of hardy native plants in our gardens to emulate our natural ecosystem. Eva understands the importance of pollinators having kept honeybees in her backyard and she has also been providing nest blocks for mason bees for many years. Recently Eva successfully reared and tagged wild Monarch butterflies as a part of a Washington State University program to research and track Okanagan Monarchs migration south.
