Event Description: The Japanese phenomenon of karoshi – ‘death by overwork’ Karoshi is the Japanese term for death from illness brought on by extreme working conditions: it is compiled as a yearly statistic in Japan. The Japanese phenomenon of karoshi – ‘death by overwork’ – and the clash between extreme societal pressure and personal need inspire an ambitious and exciting work by Vancouver dance sensation Shay Kuebler. Kuebler’s extensive study of karate and martial arts nurtured a lifelong fascination with Japanese culture, and he spent time researching material in Japan. Combining physically explosive choreography for an outstanding all-male ensemble, live taiko drumming and innovative video, KAROSHI is a thrilling and visceral theatrical experience, full of maniacal energy and black humour. Kuebler is known as one of Vancouver’s most dynamic performers, with an inimitable style that blends martial arts, hip hop and contemporary dance. www.shaykuebler.tumblr.com
